Never hire a sound engineer who tells you that these speakers compare, “at low volume,” to his $1000.00 monitor speakers. That is as dishonest as it is ridiculous. Really.

That said, these speakers have no mid-range. I don’t usually even notice mid-range, but now I really, really miss it. These speakers remind me of that time I saw a drunken bum inexplicably put a small kitten that he found in the alley into a 50 gallon steel drum, a solid, good steel drum over which he cooked his canned tuna and ranch-style beans the night before.

Thinking, “hmm, what’s that guy doing with that kitten?” all of a sudden the drunken brute broke into a whiskey-fueld frenzy and started beating the side of the drum with a section of pipe he carried around for protection. “Marla! Marla!” he screamed as the kitten shreiked in terror and I stood fear-frozen 50 feet away, cowering behind an older model Mazda that had been booted the week before but had been there for a while. Boom-boom-boom and kitty shreiks. No mid-range.

But the speakers were just $30.00 and if you listen to crap like Taylor Swift or, you know, Lynrd Skynrd, then who cares, right? If you cared how your music sounded, then you’d care what you listened to. So, if you’re a tool (or poor like the bum in my story), buy these speakers. Otherwise, do your research; do not trust popular opinion; and spend the extra money to get some good speakers.

In the end, I’m not sure what happened to the kitty, but I’m pretty sure it’s deaf if not dead by now.

I bought these speakers because the factory speakers on my emac aren’t loud enough to play some shows on hulu at easily audible levels. These speakers put out less than half the volume of my factory speakers, however. The subwoofer was pretty good (and had an independent volume control that could make it very loud, but unfortunately this didn’t help the small speakers put out any extra volume), but there was no way I could use it with my built-in speakers on my emac, so I sent it all back to amazon w/i the 30-day return period.

For the price, I wasn’t expecting fantastic quality, but the sound from these speakers was totally unacceptable. The bass had to be turned to a minimum to avoid distortion and the speakers sounded like AM radio. I sampled various types of music and got the same results. Others have rated these as good quality, so perhaps I was sent refurbished blown speakers???
